Thinkpad R51 in Review:

If you are in a tight budget, and you want all the basic features of a laptop, minus all those useless and expensive add-ons that they marinate their latest laptops in, then you should consider getting a lenovo thinkpad. Lenovo has aquired IBM’s thinkpad notebooks as now they are more popularly known as lenovo laptops.

A good lenovo notebook with all the key features is the Thinkpad R51. It has the specifications found below:

It measures 1.5-by-10.6-by-13.1-inch and weighs about 6 pounds. It has a resolution of 1,400 x 1,050 on a 15″ screen. This is quite good for graphic works although if you prefer to read the text in a larger size, you may change the resolution to 1,024×768. It even has a zoom feature on its space bar. And with accidents, this laptop has IBM’s Active Protection System (APS) that protects its hard drive from sudden movements.

For additional costs you may modify its basic Modular 24x CD-RW Combo Optical Drive this with a DVD-RW drive and a choice of memory storage of 20GB and 80GB; it also has Celeron M or Pentium M processors. Although, it already has the basic ports that you get from lenovo notebooks like S-Video, earphones, microphones, USB and PC card slots. You could also modify its adapters between 802.11g and dual-band 802.11g/a. Most users opt to upgrade its basic memory of 256MB of PC2700 DDR.

Watching DVD’s on this lenovo notebook is no problem as its lithium ion battery lasts all four hours. It is a total package in one. You have everything you need in one device. The keypad is as comfortable as a desktop computer’s. The LED light, called Think Light, also makes it convenient to use under some dim light or in dark areas like inside your car. A similar kind of light is also located on top of the screen. Be careful though as some users get confused with the Ctrl and Fn key which are interchanged.

The disadvantage with this laptop is its inadequate graphics support particularly for 3D applications and the graphic quality is not so great. It also has a pretty slow memory which inhibits multi-tasking and use of design software.

However, not everyone who buys a computer is a graphic designer anyway. Most people just want to be able to use Microsoft Programs, go online, surf and chat on the internet, open emails and watch DVD’s from their laptop. If you’re on of them then the Thinkpad R51, for less than a thousand bucks, you get yourself a pretty decent machine with a nice and durable black plastic casing. The hinges are even stiff and you would have to exert some effort in adjusting the tilt of the screen.

A laptop is inevitable in any line of work. If you want to get the job done, then buy the thinkpad R51, it won’t fail you. Lenovo is a good brand that have acquired IBM’s ever famous thinkpad laptops. They have improved the speed and capacity of this model from its predecessor and as an upgrade, this computer is a must have.

Lenovo Thinkpad R51: Functional Workhorse:

Thinkpad is a brand of Laptop computers offered by Lenovo. It was originally created, made and marketed by IBM but was purchased by Lenovo when IBM decided to sell off its personal computer division. Thinkpad notebooks are aimed primarily at the business users and therefore its focus is more on functionality than on aesthetics.

One of the best selling models of the Thinkpad brand is the Lenovo Thinkpad R51. It is targeted towards the average business or home user and comes in the standard black casing of the Thinkpad series. Although the black casing is not very attractive, it’s what the casing houses that attracts business as well as home users alike.

The system configurations of R51 consist of Windows XP Professional operating system. It has a 1.5GHz Intel Pentium M processor. Moreover, it has a 512MB DDR SDRAM as primary storage and ATI Mobility Radeon as Graphocs card. These configurations provide great computing power for the average user.

It is also the first notebook to feature dual-pointing device (touchpad as well as trackpoint) when it was released although some others have also started providing this feature in recent times. Both the pointing devices have their own set of mouse buttons for easier functionality. Also the keyboard provided is very comfortable with deep depressing keys which result in easier typing and lesser typo errors. Also to make it more type friendly in case of insufficient light, this Lenovo Notebook comes with a LED light mounted on the top.

This Lenovo laptop is a very sturdy device which is designed to be durable. The thick black casing (usually magnesium, carbon fiber reinforced plastic or titanium composite material) ensures that this notebook is exceptionally tough and can take a beating. Also it has metal screen hinges to provide proper support to the screen. It has a 10.8V, 4,400mAh (48WHr) battery which provides working time which lasts for a little over four hours.

Thinkpad’s support and service has been very highly rated by the press as well as users. The R51 comes with a one year warranty which includes free labour, free replacement of parts and a return-to-depot service. It also provides 24 hour toll free support over the phone. There is also a support website that provides information, news and various downloads for the R51.

It should be kept in mind that this is primarily a mid-level business laptop and thus has very average multimedia performance so those looking for advanced gaming and graphic options would be well suited to avoid it. Another feature that might cause irritation to some laptop aficionados is the fact that it has only two USB ports but there is a docking station add-in present in the notebook that may be used to add multiple ports to the system. Also this notebook is a little heavy in part due to the durability that it provides. All in all, it’s a normal laptop meant for normal computing needs of normal people.

It is heartening to note that Lenovo has carried on the legacy of the Thinkpad and has not diluted the quality of these notebooks. Thinkpad notebooks have always received great reviews for their reliability and service both under IBM as well as Lenovo.

Lenovo R51 ThinkPad:

The new Lenovo R51 ThinkPad is a laptop meant for serious work. Though its plain black metal casing does not elicit any excitement, the relatively Pentium M processor and ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chip are capable of delivering ample horsepower for the average users.

There are also some superb component options added to the Lenovo ThinkPad such as a DVD-RW optical drive, a 1,400×1,50 resolution 15-inch display and an integrated wireless 802.11b/g. though these configurations are a bit expensive when compared to other regular laptops in the same range, they are definitely worth it. Also a Lenovo notebook has a class of its own.

This Lenovo ThinkPad is meant for the no-nonsense users who want a typical workhorse. The typical black casing and wide comfortable keyboard are meant to be used for long hours. The wide 15-inch display of the R51 ThinkPad offers a crisp resolution and offers a desktop like comfort while working without any glares. The IBM Lenovo ThinkPad signature red pointer is placed above the B key on the keyboard. Lenovo also keep’s the touch-pad users in mind and has included a pad with two extra mouse buttons. A set of three volume control buttons along with the Access IBM button are also a useful feature in the R51 ThinkPad.

The swappable and convenient drive bay included in the Lenovo R51 Notebook also includes a VGA slot. On the left side edge of the Notebook are a set of standard ports that are a part of any laptop today. An Ethernet port, headphone & microphone jack, 2 USB 2.0 slots, S-video out ports. One type III and two type II PC Card ports. Sadly, FireWire is not included in any of the configurations. The lone parallel port is what occupies the back edge of the Lenovo R51 ThinkPad. The sloping front edge offers some slick look to this business machine. But sadly, this also means small speakers which results in a very low volume.

The configurations options offered with the R15 laptop are going to sent many users into a dizzy. From the Celeron M and Pentium M processors that range from 1.3GHz to 1.7GHz to the 2GB max SDRAM with speeds of 333MHz. from the DVD-RW optical drive to the 4,200 Hard Disk Drive ranging from 20GB to 80GB or a better, faster 5,400rpm Hard Disk drive which is available in 40GB or 80GB sizes. All these options are bound to get you spoilt for choice. Currently there are three customization options available for this Lenovo ThinkPad notebook.

The R51 Laptop also has the IBM’s Active Protection System that is meant to protect the Notebook from sudden jolts and jerks as a standard offering. All-in-all, a complete business machine that is easy on the pocket.

ThinkPad r50 Review:

With a huge brand like IBM, you would think you’d seen it all. But no, you’re in for a big surprise with the ThinkPad r50. This gem of a laptop is made of the most durable materials. You can drop it off a concrete floor and it will most likely survive.

One of the most wonderful things about Lenovo ThinkPad r50 is its Active Protection System. This feature sends up signals to the hard drives if the notebook is about to fall. This is a very sensitive feature that can be a little annoying when exposed to slight vibrations such as when you’re riding cars or public buses. What you can do about it is lower the settings so it wouldn’t be too sensitive. If you are sure that you wouldn’t in anyway drop your laptop, then simply turn it off so that you won’t be disturbed in the middle of your work.

The r50 ThinkPad comes in a cool matte black finish. It has a rugged feel to it that would surely appeal to all types of users – nerds, yuppies, stay-at-home moms. The tactile keyboard is very user-friendly and responsive. If you’re on the fence about using a pad or a small stick, then this notebook is custom-made for you. It has both. You even have an option of replacing the caps depending on whether you have large or small fingertips.

The overall built is typical of mainstream notebooks. The edges are well-chiseled and contoured, the number and letter keys well-proportioned. You might not like the large hood on the edges of the LCD but it does have a good purpose to it. It is there to strengthen the cover. In terms of opening, you can easily do it with one hand as it has a single hook that’s strong enough for the cover not to flail around.

If you’re worried about the ThinkPad r50 battery, don’t. It belongs to the highest echelon of batteries serving up to 4 hours of nonstop usage. You can do all sorts of things such as downloading applications and defragmenting and the battery wouldn’t flinch. What’s really surprising about all this battery talk is that it all comes from a standard battery with six cells. If you this is not enough, try installing a nine-cell battery for the operation to last longer.

As for the surface, it is subtly coated with rubber so that it wouldn’t easily slip off. Of course Windows is nowhere to be found but that’s just IBM being IBM. You can always install whatever operating system you want. At 2.5 kg, this is surely one of the lighter, heavy-duty notebooks around.

There are plenty of ThinkPad r50 drivers available online, and you can simply download whatever utility you need. They come in handy when storing larger archives for your files and applications. Make sure to contact IBM technical support for assistance in installing legitimate drivers. Its price is a steal for something as sophisticated and highly functional as the r50.

ThinkPad x32 Review:

When you’re always on the go and swamped with projects, it is always nice to have a reliable laptop for company. The ThinkPad x32 is one of those notebooks that are tailor-made for heavy duty. Whether you’re a professional working on your sales report or a university student churning out term papers left and right, this laptop will help you along the way to accomplish your goals.

The Lenovo ThinkPad x32 is part of the x30 continuum. It may not be as appealing as the high-end x40 series, but it gets the job done just the same. Experts have been saying that this laptop is the lovechild of the T ThinkPad series and the X40 series. This is a backhanded way of saying that the x32 is somewhat lacking in identity. Nevertheless, the x32 is a topnotch laptop even by IBM’s standards.

One of the fascinating characteristics of the x32 is its slim built and portability. Weighing only 1.64 kg, you can carry it around without the risk of developing stiff neck and shoulders. Its 30mm height makes it easy for you to stuff it inside a very slim bag. If you look for ThinkPad x32 review, you will find out that people are unanimous in their praise for this laptop’s built.

The X32 has a nice juxtaposition of size and power. It is sleek and handy, and doesn’t compromise its performance. Take for example its video memory. While X40 has a shared memory, the X32 has a whooping 16MB Radeon that’s non-shared. On top of that, it has a 5400 RMP drive that surely trumps the nearest competition.

It’s Firewire connectivity isn’t bad either. Although this is not a popular option and is slowly being phased out, many people still prefer using the Firewire technology in transferring data and files. This might come handy when your USB port isn’t working well.

The X32 is powered by an Intel Pentium M Processor that allows the whole system to do different tasks without slowing down. You will surely appreciate the 1.6Ghz processor especially if you’re the type of who does all things at once. You can play your music while in the middle of doing graphics, or watch movies while some programs are running in the background. Its speed and performance are truly satisfying even for busiest person in town.

The wonderful thing about owning a ThinkPad R51 is that even if it goes out of style, it would still be useful by upgrading the drivers of every program that you’re using. If you need some sort of driver for a particular software, simply go to the IBM website and you will see plenty of ThinkPad x32 drivers for free.

About the ThinkPad x32 battery performance, you won’t be disappointed as its 6-cell battery has a life of up to 6 hours, depending on the usage. The heavier the activities are, the shorter the battery life will be. All in all, the x32 is a satisfying device both in design and performance.
